Recommended Parasite Control in Dogs

Adult Dogs

The frequency which anti-parasitic drugs need to be given depends on your dog’s lifestyle. Dogs are at risk from parasites from a number of different sources, which are discussed later.

Worms can also be passed to people and on occasion cause significant human health issues.

In short, the frequency with which your dog(s) need(s) worming & flea control is not set in stone. Our vets will discuss the risks your dog is exposed to and recommend an appropriate plan. There are a large number of parasite products available ranging from spot-on treatments to tablets all of which offer protection against different parasites and we will be more than happy to discuss the differences with you. 

Unfortunately there is not currently a single product available to protect against everything.

 

For most dogs therefore the following protocol is recommended at Woodcroft Vets:

1) Every month – a multi-parasite treatment that controls fleas, roundworms, lungworm, ear mites, heartworm, Demodex mites, Sarcoptic mites, biting lice, hookworm, whipworm & fox lungworm.

2) Every 3- 6 months (more often for hunting pets)–  protection against  tapeworms.

If you are in a tick prevalant area or planning to travel to an area with ticks, sandflies and mosquitoes we may also recommend additional tick protection as required. Woodcroft Vets provide a single multi-wormer free of charge with each vaccine consultation.

 

Puppies

We recommend that a single multi-wormer is given at your puppy’s first Woodcroft Vets vaccination: this is supplied free of charge as part of the vaccination.

Finally, we recommend a multi-parasite monthly worming and flea control for your puppy until he or she is 6 months of age. We provide the first month’s treatment free of charge at the second vaccination.

Remember: Worms can also be passed to people and on occasion cause significant human health issues.

Adult Cats

Worms can also be passed to people and on occasion cause significant human health issues.

In short, the frequency with which your cat(s) need(s) worming & flea control is not set in stone. Our vets will discuss the risks your cat is exposed to and recommend an appropriate plan.
