New Graduate Veterinary Surgeon

Woodcroft Veterinary Group

We are a group of 7 branches based in the Stockport area of Cheshire under the vetPartners umbrella. Alongside our 6 first opinion branches we also have our own recently opened hospital housing our multi-disciplinary referral team and 24 hour A&E.

We strive for gold standard care and have a high number of insured clients so are usually able to work up cases to a high level.

We are close to the Peak District, motorway networks and Manchester Airport.

New Graduate Vet – full time

We have a developed a strong tradition of ”growing our own” vets over recent years.  With the help and support of the VetPartners New Graduate Scheme to back us up, we feel confident that we are a supportive place to work with established practices in place to ensure that the transition to general practice after graduation runs as smoothly as possible.

Each graduate is assigned an in house mentor to work alongside and this year the mentors will be undergoing the newly created RCVS VetGDP training. You will also be enrolled on to the VetPartners New Graduate Scheme where you will be assigned to a group of your peers nationwide for regular CPD sessions that we will give you time off rota to attend.

After the initial induction we try to give our new vets a day or two to shadow an experienced vet before going alone in the consult room with extended consult times (30 minutes dropping to our standard 15minutes only when you are ready). We usually find you’re desperate to get stuck in by this point! We acknowledge that everyone’s prior experience is different so operating time is scheduled to be alongside another vet until you feel confident to work more independently.

We are lucky not to have to be “on call” at Woodcroft as we have our own 24 clinic with a dedicated, experienced hospital and night team including several certificate holders and a team of experienced nurses. We feel it’s important that new graduates get exposure to emergency work but with the reassurance of back up and teaching hence, once you’ve had time to settle in, you’ll be given some evening shifts (5-11pm) in the hospital to help you get up to speed.

We aim to give you a mix of time within your dedicated branch practice and the hospital so you can gain the relevant experience whilst being able to maintain your case continuity within the first opinion setting.

Once you’ve had chance to find your way round we’ll add you to the weekend rota working 1 in 4 Saturday and Sunday in the hospital 5-11pm followed by a Monday and Tuesday off in lieu meaning average working week is 5 days.

The starting salary for this position is £34,000.

RCVS membership and one other professional body (eg BSAVA) paid for. You will be eligible for our auto-enrolment pension and Healthshield scheme. CPD is provided as per the VetPartners New Graduate Scheme and this will form your CPD allowance for the 2 years of the scheme.
